Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, located using intelligence, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of approach shafts down to the site... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - also known as Daesh - established militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and resolve to work closely with our allies, to stamp out any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.

British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its routing at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their courage," he said. "They were part of a great many UK service members on duty over the holidays. This action, to take out militants who pose a risk to our security, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the American forces executed what it called a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in both countries.
