Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon this year.

Players are granted the option to challenge specific decisions from the official, echoing the practice already in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development comes just a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
